Well my friends, last Sunday wrapped up a 5 week break I gave myself after graduating. Let me tell you, 5 weeks vacation feels gooooood! During that time I went to the beach a few times, had a few bonfires, did lots of hiking, drove up to Nor Cal, hung out with my Irish friends I met in Hong Kong twice (who are now working in San Francisco for the summer!), had a blast at the Myer Family Graduation Party (all 3 Myer kids graduated this year!), hung out in Santa Cruz, spent a week camping in the Sierras, and made my way back to San Diego on June 22! Here are some highlights!
Happy Hour with the Irish!
Jared Graduated High School!
The Family at Jared's Graduation
When camping up in the Sierras Mom & I hiked over to Duck Lake!
Hiking & kayacking everyday = HEAVEN!
On a final note: I got the best job EVER! For the next six weeks I will be working as an Activity Coordinator at an International Language School! Basically, my job is to take large groups of international students around San Diego to do fun stuff! In essence, I am getting paid to hang out at the SD Zoo, Padres Games and go to the beach!
Life is Good : )
I DID IT! I officially graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis is Management. After the ceremony on Saturday morning, my best friend, Ashley, and I had a joint BBQ with family and friends to celebrate. All I have to say is: WOoOHOoO!
Cheers to Summer!
So, Summer has officially started, and man it feels good! The celebrating started last Friday when a few friends of mine got together and picked up some pizza, beer, chips, and cake. We all finished our finals that morning and didn't have the energy to go out, so we stayed in and reminisced our college years together!
Saturday I headed to the beach for an afternoon of volleyball, swimming in the ocean, frisbee and a bonfire at night! Let me tell you, it has been HOT down here! Needless to say, the beaches were a little crowded, but we had a BLAST!
The rest of the week as been filled with more BBQ's, pool time, sleeping, walking around Lake Murray and, well, enjoying summer!
Here is the Graduation chain my roommies and I have been working on since March. As you can tell, we're am getting reallllllly close to graduation. This picture was taken a few days ago, now I only have 3 days to go! Woohoo!!
I am proud to announce I had my LAST day of class on Friday, two finals today and only two more to go until I am done with school FOREVER! I officially graduate in 12 days.....then I am unemployed! I have been searching jobs all semester, been to quite a few interviews, even got a job offer, but I don't quite know what I want to do. So for now, the plan is to enjoy a little bit of time off after graduation, rest, clear my mind and figure out what direction I want to go in to take the first steps in my career.
I know it has been a long time since I have given an update, so here are some highlights from the past month or so....
The weather has been beautiful (except for the past few days) and I have been heading to the coast as much as possible! Some of my friends from church have been going to South Mission Beach every Friday & Sunday afternoon to play volleyball- I'm still a little rusty, but it is a BLAST! The last game I played SIX of my serves actually went OVER the net! WooHoo! Here is a picture of my friend Sara G. and I watching the sunset in Point Loma...
I met up with some old friends for Taco Tuesday at On The Boarder...
The non-profit I work for, the SDSU Green Campus Program, held the first annual Green is Gold rock concert. We had a line up of 5 local bands and organizations in the community who are dedicated to "going green." It was pretty sweet!
I watched the Padres LOOSE to the Dodgers : ( But let's be real, I don't care about sports! We had a good time, and that's what counts in my book! (PS: I did not take this picture.....we had grass seats!)
There was also a lot of hanging out, picnics @ Lake Murray, movie nights and other random good times in the last few weeks!
Aright, I need to get back to studying!
So, Spring Break 2008 has been like no other: extremely low key! Determined to start break off right, I played hookey on Friday (2 of my 3 classes on Friday were cancelled....come on, you know you would too!). I spent the day at beach with my friends Brittney & Blair- it was a little windy, but still a good time! That night my roommies and I hit up happy hour at Pacific Beach Bar & Grill- who have the best might I add. Fifty cent appetizers and $3 beers- HEAVEN!
Somehow I managed to fall into a Spring Cleaning fever on Saturday morning and cleaned everything in the apartment- I even scrubbed down the shower! Whew! Saturday afternoon I headed up to Laguna for a big bash at a funky South African restaurant called Mozambique. Mom finished her year long rennovation at Montage, so her entire crew came out to celebrate- and Montage was catching the tab, so you know we all had a good time : ) Needless to say, I siezed the opportunity to explore all of those expensive mixed drinks I am normally a little hesitant to buy on my own nickel!
On Sunday Mom and I came back down to San Diego, ran a few errands, walked around Lake Murray and went to church. First thing Monday morning I had my wisdom teeth removed! To make a long story short, we changed insurances at the beginning of the year, I called up a dentist to make an appointment to get a referral for surgery, they were booked and just gave me a phone referral. I called the surgons office, set an appointment, they sent paperwork by mail and I didn't have to go in until the day of my surgery. Sounds easy, right? But it dawned on me a few hours before my appointment that I am having surgery performed by a doctor I've never met and was referred to by a dentist I've never actually seen before! What if this surgon is sketchy and uses rusty tools or is like the dentist in the "Little Shop of Horrors"!?!? Luckily, the office was super clean, the staff was really nice and the surgery went excellent. I slept the whole ride back up to Laguna, and then some!
I can sum up the rest of the week like this: books, soup, tv, pudding, sleep, jello. I managed to heal pretty quickly and drove back down to San Diego on Wednesday, but I still had to take it easy- doctors orders. So I spent the rest of the week watching movies, going for short walks, reading, nothing too exciting.
So there you have it, SPRING BREAK 2008...... woohoo! I guess you can say that it wasn't the most exciting, hardly compared to a week in Mexico, but hey, it was relaxing!
I know, it has been a long time, but let me reassure you this semester is FLYING by! Maybe it's because it is my LAST semester or that I am just plain busy, but I feel like every week just turns into one looong day! Needless to say, going up to Big Bear last weekend was a much needed opportunity to slooooow down for awhile! Here's the cabin we stayed at:
By the time Kristen & I got there, the boys have been drinkin quite a bit and discovered the side yard could be easily used as a toboggan & snowboarding slope!
I don't know who came up with this one, but the mound of snow on the deck became our ice chest!
Here's the group (Left-Right): Colby (Jake's roommate), Jake, Jason (Jake's friend), Mom, Kristen (one of my roommates), and Jared
Basically, we spent the weekend relaxing, reading (well, not the boys...), playing in the snow, eating icicles, going for walks, playing games and watching movies. Saturday night we went out for a night on the town (literally...town...) and hit up all 3 bars- each of which has it's own local flavor, consisting of flamboyantly gay cowboys, Brittney-Spear-diva-Kareoke singers and a handful of regulars!
It snowed all Saturday night and and looked like this Sunday morning:
It was a strange transition starting the day in snow and ending the day in 70* San Diego sunshine! Life is good : )
Ah, so now I am just getting through midterms for the next week and a half then it is Spring Break starting March 28!! I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled that Monday (ouch!) but other than that I am looking forward to relaxing, spending some time with Mom and going for a few good hikes : )
So one of my cousins in Germany, Bernd, is planning to visit California next fall and is trying to get his brother, Marcus, to come along. Therefore this blog is dedicated to reviewing why California is amazing, and to convince anyone who thinks otherwise that California is one of the best place to visit/live.
Ok, first of all, we have Arnold Schwarzenegger. Who else has the Terminator as their leading political figure? People have learned not to mess with California! I mean, just LOOK at him- he could kill somebody with the blink of his eye!
Secondly, we have San Francisco. This city has enough personality for a whole country. Chinatown, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square, Golden Gate Park, Cable Cars, street musicians, you name it, San Francisco's got it!
Redwood trees so big you can drive through them! Enough said!
Yosemite, the most beautiful place on Earth. I'm pretty sure God said so himself.
Las Vegas- ok, it's not actually in California...but it's close!
A trip to California isn't complete with a trip to the coast...
...and learning how to surf!
The weather is good almost all year round! (PS: the chart is in *C)
And last but not least, I've got a whole lot of family here! Cheers for the Burtscher/Smithson/Myer/Zeno family!
So Marcus, I hope you are convinced, California is the place to be! As for everyone else, I hope this was a good refresher of why we love our state : )
That's all for today - have a good week!
Ok, it's official, this semester is finally in full gear!
I will admit the first few weeks of school I got a chance to slack off and have quite a bit of fun...such as putting the moves on Elvis in Coronado...
And eating the most amazing dessert I have ever had in my life!
But now it is time to tighten the belt and get down to business! On top of school and work I have been updating my resume, job hunting and preparing for the Career Fair at SDSU next Thursday! I still haven't figured out what I want to do or where I want to go- so at this point I am searching for the best opportunity. As of right now I am looking at companies that provide a Management Training Program. I figure it's a great way to ease into the business world and get a little extra [paid!] training along the way!
Keep your fingers crossed and wish me luck on Thursday!
So I must say a highlight of the week was going to the Ocean Beach Farmers Market on Wednesday. My friends Sara, Blair, and I started off watching the sunset at Sunset Cliffs & walking the pier in OB (quick fact: some say it is the longest pier on the West Coast!)
For those of you not too familiar with San Diego, Ocean Beach is hippie central- it is basically the Santa Cruz of Southern California! Plus, they have the best farmers market in town. It is a mix of fresh produce, ethnic street food, hand crafted jewelry & clothes, street musicians, and a of course, amazing samples! I ended the night with a Squash Blossom Quesadilla- delicious!
Yay!! Congrats on the job!!! read more
